Today, trim the chubby syllabus.
Wake early and dehydrated. Begin the morning startled at how quickly a suntan fades, how full-on gambling addictions begin with radio contests, how a real lake will rub your shoulders and cook you dinner and have a way of making you worry not. Be pretty sure this could be a forever kinda thing.
Be hyperbolic.
Consider studying or prepping, and then draft a poem called “On Shame” instead. Revisit those pulmonology and limnology series (figure out how to pluralize series) and jot--Lake-Jumping as Ecstasy (or something less trite) to go with Lake-Dunking as Epiphany--in the margins of the day.
Say yes and thank you to The Dirty Napkin for taking “The Study of Lakes.” Anticipate its publication in the fall issue, which comes out on September 22 (say to yourself, out loud, in the quiet, pre-boy morning: how nice--and professional--of them to give an exact date!).
Stop procrastinating and tell these young creative writers why, what, where, when, and how. Rejoice at the prospect of teaching Intro to Creative Writing. Rejoice at one last poetry workshop for only two credits. Rejoice at the new pact you’ve made with yourself and solidify it by stating it here:
One poem a day
every day—all fall
and winter. Write
a whole new book
not a “thesis.”
Do not be afraid.
